Participation Trophy Engineering
We have run out of actual product innovations, so we're turning our keynote preroll into a community art project and calling it 'collaborative technological expression'. By asking developers to create our countdown, we're both outsourcing design labor and manufacturing synthetic excitement about an event where we'll likely announce incrementally improved products. It's like asking wedding guests to design the invitation and calling it 'nuptial co-creation'.
A countdown animation is not a meaningful technological contribution, regardless of how many buzzwords surround its creation. The actual value here is minimal engagement marketing disguised as community participation. Most submissions will likely be polite but unremarkable variations on a timer theme.
